Water Security

Our Approaches, Strategies, Targets & Initiatives

SAMEE Group also monitors water usage and intensity as part of our integrated climate and environmental performance strategy. Water management has emerged as a key element of SAMEE Group’s broader climate adaptation strategy, particularly as climate volatility increasingly impacts water availability and quality. The Group integrates water stewardship by monitoring consumption, optimising usage, and ensuring full compliance with local withdrawal and discharge regulations. Water risk mitigation is embedded through initiatives such as consumption monitoring, RO reject water reuse, rainwater harvesting initiatives, and pilot programs for greywater reuse. The table below presents the total volume of water used over the past three financial years:

Total water usage increased as a result of operational expansion; however, SAMEE Group is actively investing in water efficiency measures to mitigate this growth. Notably, the Group recorded zero water-related noncompliance incidents during the reporting period.

Total Water Withdrawal by Source (Kilolitres)

During the reporting period, water from our operations was channelled through wastewater treatment systems to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards before being discharged to the public municipal drainage system.

Total Water Discharged by Destination (Kilolitres)

We remain committed to enhancing water efficiency and expanding water recycling and rainwater harvesting initiatives to reduce reliance on municipal water sources and support sustainable water management across all sites.

Water Management Plans

We have implemented comprehensive water management plans across all seven of our owned operational sites (100%), encompassing water monitoring, efficiency initiatives, wastewater treatment, and emergency response measures.

Water Recycle & Reuse

Water, the source of life and essential to our industries, is a resource that demands our most responsible and innovative stewardship. In an era marked by growing water scarcity, adopting sustainable practices in water management is not just an option but a necessity.

At SAMEE, we've recognized the importance of water recycling and have embraced it as a core component of our commitment to sustainability. Water recycling involves treating and repurposing wastewater from our processes, allowing us to conserve water, reduce our environmental impact, and operate efficiently.

Our reverse osmosis ("RO") wastewater recycling system ensures that daily 80,000 litres of RO wastewater is collected into a valuable resource. We've successfully repurposed collected RO wastewater for toilet flushing, scrubber system and wastewater treatment plant, effectively reducing our reliance on freshwater sources.

Rainwater Harvesting

We are passionate about making a positive impact on the world, and that starts with the way we use our most precious resource: water. That's why we're excited to share our journey with rainwater harvesting, a simple yet powerful way to embrace nature's gift and make every drop count.

Our rainwater harvesting system is like a treasure trove for raindrops. It gathers water from the skies, channeling it from our rooftops into a storage system. We've been amazed by how much we have been able to collect approximately 1,095,000 litres of rainwater per year.

Our rainwater harvesting system is more than just a practical solution—it's a commitment to the planet. It allows us to lessen our reliance on traditional water sources, conserve precious freshwater, and reduce the burden on local water infrastructure.

Water Saving Tap Inserts

We are committed to saving water and reducing our environmental impact. We've taken a simple but effective step by installing water tap inserts across our facilities to control the water flow rate. The installation of water tap inserts is a straightforward and cost-effective way to save water and promote conservation. The result has been a significant reduction in water usage from 8 litres per minute to 2 litres per minute, contributing to our sustainability goals and reducing costs.

By using less water, we're also lowering the energy needed for water treatment and distribution, decreasing our carbon footprint.
